  • From this part of the world most travellers know the western side with Vancouver and the Rockies as an area to visit. Well worth thinking about is a visit to the other side which is quite accessible from New Zealand. You firstly have Niagara Falls and Toronto in Ontario ( including vineyards to visit if you are of that persuasion ). Then you have the old French areas with Montreal and the province of Quebec to name just a little. Nearby is Ottawa the capital city of Canada. Then you have the Maritime provinces including Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and New Foundland – they are often referred to as Atlantic Canada. You even have Saint-Pierre and Miquelon which are two small islands and still part of France ! Another option is to join a cruise departing from Montreal, making its way up the St Lawrence River to Quebec, then Prince Edward Island and on to Halifax and concluding in Boston ( a number of departures in the warmer months May to August )

  • For some weeks now we have had various “ Early Purchase” type deals for 2018 travel available in the marketplace. Most of these offers are for travel to Europe but other regions are also available. Is it a good idea to purchase now you may well be wondering ?
If your dates are very specific and you know those then booking early gives you the best opportunity to get exactly what you want. If you are tempted to purchase now but don’t quite know your requirements then be aware that any date changes made after tickets are issued can be expensive. Pretty much all these fare offers have to be paid in full within a few days of booking. All the current offers have a limited sales period and in most cases this is late November. However, that sales period could be extended or the fares will vanish and then reappear a number of times well into next year. It is very rare that a future fare of similar type will be lower, if anything they will creep up a bit. Even airlines know that reducing special fare levels will not be looked at kindly by travellers who have purchased early !!

  • Possibly one of the most scenic coastlines anywhere and ideal for a relaxed cruise on a small vessel. Most have a maximum of 20 cabins / 40 guests and these days you have various categories of ships from deluxe modern through to traditional wooden construction. Main departure ports are Dubrovnik, Split, or Opatija and most voyages are of seven nights duration. You have a choice of one way itineraries or journeys commencing and concluding at the same port. They also offer special departures with yoga, wine, gourmet food, walk and hike, bike and hike, as themes should something there be of interest.

  • I’ve mentioned this before, but in the not too distant future all airlines are likely to charge you for pre seating in economy class – especially on the good deals, and those are the fares most people purchase. Currently, of the well known airlines your best chance to be pre seated at no cost would be with Air New Zealand or Singapore Airlines but even they only allow a percentage of the aircraft to be accessed in this way. There is also the possibility to secure a “preferred” seat at a higher cost again and these have more legroom – such as exit rows or bulkhead rows. However there can be issues with these – proximity to bassinette positions, near toilets, people standing in “your” space. Charges can vary markedly for pre seating but the range appears to be $40 to $70 per seat per long haul sector just to give an idea – that’s for regular seating. Legroom seating is more in the $150 to $200 range.

  • Perhaps you are not familiar with it ? This canal is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the oldest continuously operated canal in North America, working its way 202 kms from Ottawa to Kingston. As you journey along the Rideau you’ll be able to travel through three of Ontario’s most interesting regions – Ottawa with its gentle surrounding countryside, the quaint, historic villages of Ontario's Highlands and the stunning lakes and plains that mark your approach to Kingston and The Great Waterway. Self drive hire boats are available for voyages of various durations commencing from May of next year.

  • Rail is a wonderful way to travel around Europe – the network is vast, the trains are good, and an added bonus is that you are with the locals going about their daily lives. Large panoramic windows at ground level enable you to see a lot more than through a porthole sized outlet at 35000 feet up amongst the clouds. Each year I put together many arrangements involving rail for the travel and well located reasonably priced hotels. You can pretty much choose any routing you wish and it can be all pre booked and paid from here. Im happy to prepare a schedule and costing , tailor made to your requirements !

  • The word “barge” doesn’t really do it justice – this is a four star restored classic (1928 built) vessel which takes a maximum of 10 passengers in five cabins and essentially is your moving hotel.

  • Not too many years ago all airlines offered the same baggage allowance and travel agents could advise travellers quite clearly what that allowance was ! Im sorry to say that has all changed now.
